The Small Business Administration’s (SBA's) purpose is to promote
small business development and entrepreneurship through business
financing, government contracting, and technical assistance
programs. SBA also works with other Federal agencies to reduce
regulatory and paperwork burdens on small businesses and serves as
the long term lender to homeowners, renters and businesses impacted
by disasters.
Small businesses are critical to the economy of this country. They
provide more than half of existing private sector jobs, two-thirds
of new jobs, and more than half of the nonfarm United States’ Gross
Domestic Product. Trends such as corporate downsizing continue to
underline the critical importance of small businesses to the
nation’s economy.
